Alexander Roma Mansion

type: community-focused

The Alexander Roma Mansion is the only example of a mansion on Zakynthos Island that has survived the earthquakes of 1953, although it suffered extensive damage. In 1955, the building was partially rebuilt and maintained by the author Dionysios Romas. The building was first constructed in 1660 by Robert John Geoffrey, the Vice Consul of England in Zakynthos. During the period of the 'English Protection' (1816-64), it was the residence of the British governor and was also known as the 'Residenza'. In 1880, the building was bought by Alexander Romas and became the principal residence of the family. The mansion was turned into a museum that hosts artworks, a rich library with rare editions, a collection of family portraits, paintings, etchings, guns, antiques, and objects that reflect the lifestyle of the Aristocrats of the island. Alexander Romas was a Greek politician and President of the Greek Parliament. He was a special figure of Greek modern political and military history.
