Zakynthos Museum

type: object-centered

The neoclassical building of Zakynthos Museum overlooks the big Dionysios Solomos square. According to an architectural study conducted by Spyridon Leggeris, the building was constructed in 1959. The collection of the museum comprises works that survived the devastating earthquake and fire of 1953. Moreover, in the Zakynthos Museum visitors have the chance to familiarize themselves with the evolution of post-Byzantine and Modern Greek art. The museum also offers a comprehensive view of the Western art influence on the Ionian Islands. The collection is hosted in 7 halls, namely in two rooms on the ground floor and five on the first floor while several archaeological findings have been placed on storage rooms. Inside the building, there is a maintenance workshop as well as rooms that have been designed to house administrative and scientific personnel. The museum occasionally hosts temporary exhibitions such as the Pierides and Frissiras collections and the honorary exhibition of Kostas Barbas. Last but not least, educational projects, guided tours for people with disabilities under the “Horizon” program, cultural activities and anniversary events have also been hosted.
