The collections of the Korgialenio Historical and Folklore Museum in Argostoli present the whole history of Kefalonia from the Venetian rule (1500 AC) till the devastating earthquakes of 1953. The museum includes objects used by the locals in their daily life which was shaped by all historical events that took place on the island (conquests, Union with Greece, wars, earthquakes). The museum was created to preserve the historical memory and promote the existing evolving cultural identity of the island that saves its rich cultural heritage as a starting point. More specifically, the collection includes everyday objects, furniture, tools, appliances, artworks, ecclesiastical objects, and historical documents. The museum is housed on the ground floor of the preserved post-earthquake building of Korgialenios Library of Argostoli. Two of the collections are hosted on the ground floor of the new wing of the building. The permanent collection of the museum is divided into thematic sections: urban section, rural section, ecclesiastical art, and the Argostoli City Plan. The aim is to showcase the local cultural identity having as an ultimate goal to make visitors feel that they enter a warm and family environment so that their experience is not only aesthetic but also experiential. Transition of one section to another is done in such a way that the sense of unity is always present.
