The church, with three naves, houses inside numerous chapels of the Terlizzi’s nobility, including the De Gemmis’ one, who contributed to the restoration of 1619.

The convent of Minori Osservanti and the adjoining church were built at the beginning of the sixteenth century. In 1619 the entire community financed the restoration of the church, which for about a century, from 1782 to 1872 served as a Matrix church, until the completion of the new Cathedral.
