On the side of the bridge, upon arrival in the capital of the island, a four-sided symmetrical obelisk consisting of carved stones emerges from the sea. This monument is called "Kolona" and was built in 1813 in order for the Kefalonian Parliament to express its gratitude towards Great Britain. The big earthquake of 1953 caused damage to one-third of the bridge on the side of Argostoli. The bridge and the obelisk survived the earthquake having suffered considerable damage.
