The church of Panagia Faneromeni, dedicated to the Dormition of Virgin Mary, is situated at the district Ammos where according to tradition, in the 11th century an icon of Virgin Mary was miraculously found. In 1633, it was documented as a famous parish church with considerable movable and immovable property. Significant works of well-known post-Byzantine painters of the 16th and 17th century bedecked the church. Among them was the portable icon depicting the Dormition of Virgin Mary by Ilias Moskos and “Ourania” (celestial) painted on the flat roof by Nikolaos Doxaras. According to archival sources, works of Michael Damaskinos, Emmanuel Tzanes (Buniales), and other great artists of the era were also decorating the church. The glided wooden-carved iconostasis made by Manos Maganiaris is really remarkable. In 1953, the church was destroyed almost completely. The portable icon of Panagia Amolyntou (Our Lady Immaculate), work signed by Emmanuel Tzanes (1641) survived and is now at the Byzantine Museum of Zakynthos.
