Among all preserved monasteries of Zakynthos, the monastery of Panagia Anafonitria is considered the oldest because its foundation dates back to the early 15th century and was associated with the Tokko family. They were the last Frankish rulers of Zakynthos, Kefalonia and Lefkada. The katholikon (three-aisled basilica) did not suffer destructive damages from earthquakes. The icon of Panagia Anafonitria is considered miraculous.
