Ugo Foscolo was born in Zakynthos in 1778 by a Greek mother and an Italian father and has lived on the island till 1792. He then departed for Venice to continue his studies. He lived an adventurous life, wrote wonderful poems, and participated in rebel movements of that time. Ugo Foscolo fought alongside the French Republicans and worked with many other people for the creation of the modern Italian state. Later, however, disappointed by the hopes and expectations that the French Revolution created, he left for London where he died in 1827 at the age of only 49 years old. His death upset the residents of Zakynthos.They held a memorial service in the church of Saint Mark and the eulogy was delivered in Italian by the young poet Dionysios Solomos. Although he wrote all his works in Italian, he never forgot his origins and hymned his beloved homeland. In fact, in his last letters to relatives in Zakynthos, he wrote that he was planning to return to his island.
