Title

Zampelios House

A few meters from the pedestrian street in the center of Lefkada, and opposite the Church of Saint Nicholaos, there is one of the oldest buildings in Lefkada, the so-called Zampelios House. Ioannis Zampelios (1787) and Spyros Zampelios (1815) were born in this listed building. The building dates back to the 18th century and is a typical example of the characteristic Lefkadian seismic architecture due to which the building survived successive major earthquakes which struck the area in previous centuries. In January 1821, Zampelios House hosted the secret meeting between the Society of Friends (‘Filiki Etairia’) and chieftains from Central Greece who prepared the outbreak of the Greek Revolution of 1821.  Restoration work carried out by the Municipality of Lefkada under the supervision of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Aetoloacarnania and Lefkada is underway.
