The Church of Panagia Sission celebrates on the day of the Presentation of Mary. Where the Church stands today was a chapel in honor of Virgin Mary which was a dependencyof the Monastery of “Sission” or “Sissia”. The Monastery of Sission was founded by the Italian Catholic monk Francis of Assisi and was named after his hometown Assisi. The Church of Panagia Sission is registered as a dependency since 1710. After the Catholic monks left, the Monastery passed on to the OrthodoxChristians. The Church of Panagia Sission was small and suited monks’ needs. In 1860, the Church passed on to the noble families of Kontomichalos, Momferatos and Peristianos. Theydemolished the small Church and built a magnificent Byzantine-style one. It was used as a Metropolitan Cathedral till 1895 but unfortunately, it was destroyed by the earthquakes of 1953. After four years, on 10 April 101957, started its re-erection by the Greek army and on 23 March 1958 took place the inauguration in the presence of the President of the Church of the archipriest father Nicholaos Garbis and the church-council members. The holy icon of Panagia Portaitissa, a work of Andreas Fokas Ioannis Kosmetatos that dates from 1826, as well as other treasures are kept inside the church.
