The monastery of Panagia Faneromeni, a point of reference for all Lefkadians, is situated on a hill, within a distance of 3km from the town. Panagia (Virgin Mary) is the patron and protector of the island and is celebrated on Monday of the Holy Spirit gathering an influx of pilgrims. It was named Faneromeni (Revealed), because Panagia, in the first icon of her that was ordered from Constantinople, was miraculously revealed on the wood after the hieromonk and icon painter Kallistos had fervently prayed and fasted. The icon painter only added the colors. The monastery was multiply damaged over the course of time. It took its present form during the Venetian rule (1684-1797). After a destructive fire, the temple was re-erected in 1887 and obtained the new icon of Theotokos (Mother of God), a reproduction of the old one, painted in Mount Athos by the hieromonk Veniamin Kontrakis. At the same period, the iconostasis, a work of Eustathios Prosalentis,as well as its icons made by Chionadites icon painters were created. The monastery was renovated again and a new cell wing and other rooms were constructed. An Ecclesiastical Museum rich in heirlooms from the monastery and other churches of the island operates in its premises. Also, the monastery hosts the Maritime Museum with models of ships, constructed and donated by Nikolaos Thanos (Morina).
