Title

De Bosset Bridge

The stone bridge on the bay of Argostoli is a project led by the Swiss Charles-Philippe De Bosset. It was constructed in 1813 by the engineer and military governor of Kefalonia and officer of the English army. It is one kilometer long and was originally wooden. The bridge connects Argostoli town with the opposite coast. In the middle of the bridge, you will encounter a pyramidal monument dedicated to the manufacturers of the bridge. Till 1813, the only exit from Argostoli to the rest of Kefalonia Island was by traveling right around the Koutavos lagoon. This route was not only time-consuming but also dangerous for public health because of the increased numbers of mosquitoes in the swamps that were a source of diseases. The De Bosset Bridge offered an alternative to the transportation of the inhabitants at that time and is one of the most important projects that the British rule offered to the island of Kefalonia. The De Bosset Bridge is also known as Devoseto Bridge, or Drapanos Bridge, named after the place situated on the one end of the bridge. The Municipal Cemetery and the British Cemetery are at the end of the bridge on the Drapanos side.
