The church of Anogi in Ithaca is dedicated to the Dormition of Virgin Mary. It is a large Byzantine basilica church, which, according to the sources, was built in the 12th century. It is considered one of the oldest and most important churches in the Balkans and has been declared a protected monument. When Anogi was the capital of the island in the 16th -17th century, the church operated as a Metropolitan Church. The church of Anogi has marvelous icons of saints and angels, painted on every wall and assorted in five Biblical zones, with influences from Italy and the monasteries of Meteora. A special characteristic of the church of Anogi is its acoustics. When it was built, pitchers were placed in the walls to function as amplifiers. This reflects the importance of the church of Anogi since a large number of believers gathered there as it used to be the Metropolitan church. Moreover, it has a wonderful steeple, constructed during the Venetian period in 1682.
