Orthonies is a mountain village to the north of the island, 40 km from Zakynthos town. Amphitheatrically built on the slopes of Vrachionas Mountain, it is where the historical Monastery of Panagia Spilaiotissa (Holy Mother of the cave) constructed in the mid-16thcentury stands. The churches are the most important monuments of the village. Not far from Orthonies, there is the historical Monastery of Panagia (Virgin Mary) Spilaiotissa which was constructed by the monk Ioannikios Katsivis. The katholikon and the steeple of the monastery survived the earthquakes of 1953. The monastery was rebuilt preserving some of its former infrastructures. The most remarkable relic of the monastery is the ancient icon of Panagia (Virgin Mary) Spilaiotissa. The icon was found in a cave on the slopes of Kentro during the Renaissance period. According to local tradition, it was hidden there from the years of Iconoclasm (726-842).
