Strani Hill is only 2 km from Zakynthos town. It is the place that inspired Dionysios Solomos to write the Greek national hymn as he was listening to the cannon fires from Messolonghi. The poet’s mansion –preserved in good condition till today– is located close to the top of the hill. In the small square where the bust of Dionysios Solomos stands today, there was a tree under the shadow of which he wrote the “Hymn to Liberty” and the “Free Besieged”.
