The Musical-Literary Group “Apollon” of Karia was founded in 1956 and demonstrates a particularly rich history in cultural events on the island of Lefkada. It has organized theatrical performances and hosts a music school and dance classes. In 1954, the “representation of the rustic wedding” took place for the first time and since 1979 the Musical-Literary Group “Apollon” organizes this representation on a regularly basis together with the “Riganada” feast celebrated since 1984. The Cultural Center (‘Stegi Politismou”) was founded for the preservation and promotion of the cultural history of the Group and Karia. It is hosted in the former primary school of Karia and covers two floors. The ground floor includes traditional costumes from the whole island of Lefkada, in particular from the mountain area, as well as newspaper clippings, documents, photographic material, honorary plaques, awards and souvenirs from travels and the participation of the Group in cultural events in Lefkada, in Greece and abroad. In the art room, there is a permanent painting exhibition with paintings by Vasilis Katopodis that present the rustic wedding, and temporary exhibitions of differentthemes. There is also a folklore exhibition with folklore objects relevant to the rustic houses o fKaria and mountainous Lefkada. In another room, old clothes and furniture that were used for representing the rustic wedding are exhibited. All exhibits come from the collections of the Group and donations of residents of Karia. The first floor is home to a library with archives of the history of Karia. The cloakroom of the Group hosts various traditional costumes from all over Greece. There is also a special room of the former school that includes exhibits of the early 20th century, a music school of the Group with contemporary and older musical instruments, and the Group’s offices.
