Title

Folklore Museum Orpheus "Pantazis Kontomichis”

type: community-focused

The Folklore Museum Orpheus was founded in 1978 with a view to collecting, preserving and diffusing folk customs, culture, expression and history of Lefkada. Under the guidance of the late folklorist-philologist Pantazis Kontomichis, rare items of the folk tradition of Lefkada that had started to disappear were collected. In May 2010, a traditional mansion, built in 1850 in the historical center of Lefkada town, became home to Orpheus Group and the Folklore Museum. It was renovated and designed following contemporary guidelines of museology. Its collections cover a wide spectrum of residents’ daily life in the town and villages around Lefkada. Activities that are organized in the museum include educational projects, folklore events and group guided tours. The rest of the building hosts other activities of the Group: the Mantolinata choir and the Cloakroom of the Dance Group.
