Title

The Church of Saints Timotheus and Mavra

Build Year: 1802
Faith: Eastern Christianity, Eastern Orthodoxy

The Church of Saints Timotheus and Mavra in the village of Machairado Zakynthos is one of the most beautiful churches on the island and was built on the spot where, according to local tradition, a shepherd from the neighboring village of Lagopodo miraculously found the icon of Saint Mavra. In the beginning, the inhabitants of the village built a chapel on this spot where later they built the present pericalli church with the beautiful 37-meter-high bell tower, the work of Nikolaos Kyvetos in the year 1802. In the bell tower there are four sweet-sounding bells which were made in Venice. Unfortunately, in 2005, the church was completely destroyed after a fire, losing unique valuable portable icons, the elaborate wood-carved iconostasis, relics of Saints and the miraculous icon of Agia Mavra, which was gilded in 1896 by Queen Olga. Today both the inhabitants of the village and the people of Zakynthos are making efforts to restore the temple to its former glory and once again constitute a monument of unique art.
