Archaeological Museum of Vathi

type: object-centered

The collections of the museum comprise exhibits that range from the Geometric period to Roman times and were excavated in Aetos and other places. The museum hosts a significant geometric collection. Among the most important exhibits of the museum is a ring-shaped vessel with angled walls that dates to the late Geometric period, and a dedicatory inscription from the late Archaic period found in the Cave of the town that mentions Athena and Hera.  The entrance hall is decorated with tomb columns. In the first hall, exhibits from the Protogeometric and the Geometric period (1000 - 700 B.C.) are hosted –mainly clay pots− and among them is a collection of locally made pots as well as copper and ivory objects that were either utensils or votive offerings. The second hall hosts findings dating from the 7th century B.C. such as clay pots made both locally and abroad and many rhytons while in the horizontal display case, fragments of a 7th B.C. utensil that was used to serve wine are exhibited. This particular utensil also depicts the most famous inscription which refers to friendship and hospitality and is written in dactylic hexameter, characteristic of Homeric poetry. The third hall displays findings from various periods and locations. Some exhibits were excavated in the north part of the island from the end of the 19th till the early 20th century. A microscopic copper bust of a bearded man with cone-shaped headwear who must be identified as Odysseus along with a 6th-century inscription depicting the names of the goddesses Athena and Hera written in boustrophedon script style are items of great importance. The collection of clay pots and votive offerings from the temple of the Nymphs, at Marmarospilia as well as the silver and bronze Ithacan coins where the image of Odysseus and the word ITHACON is inscribed are also of great interest. This hall also displays a roman marble bust dating from the early period in its original size as it was found in Vathy.
