The Holy Monastery of Koronatos is believed to have been built in the 15th century. During the 16th century, the Monastery was destroyed by an earthquake but was rebuilt after an icon of the Mother of God was found. The nickname "Koronatos" was given by the founder of the Monastery, Leontas Polykalas, who arrived on the island after being persecuted in Koroni. The Monastery is also known as "Tear Shedder" because in 1867, during a period of strong earthquakes, it is believed that the icon was found on the floor with tears in the Mother of God’s eyes. In general, since the 15th century when the Monastery was built, it has been associated with miracles. The chapels of Saint Nectarios and Saint Paraskevi, both of which present an important collection of relics, belong to the Monastery. The girls of the island were taught traditional embroidery, keeping a long-lasting tradition alive.
