The archeological site of Alalkomenes is located on the hill of Aetos in Ithaca.The location of the town is of strategic importance as two natural ports exist both on the north and south of it, while from the top of the hill, where the acropolis is located, the surveillance of the canal between Ithaca and Kefalonia as well as the horizon between Ithaca and Acarnania was possible.The ancient town on the hill of Aetos has been known since the beginning of the 19th century and became known through descriptions of foreign travelers.Henry Schliemann carried out his first excavation on the hill of Aetos.From the first excavations, copper coins in the form of Odysseus and the inscription ITHACA came to light.The remains of the ancient town are many and cover the entire eastern slope of the hill.The town is surrounded by walls, certain parts of which reach an impressive height.Excavations at the country road were carried out by the British School of Archeology in the 1930s.The excavations brought to light a temple identified as the temple of Apollo.The findings date from the Protogeometric (10th century BC) to the Hellenistic Period (from the 3rd century BC tillthe early 2nd century BC).All excavation findings are exhibited in the Museum of Vathi.
