The interior of the church, with three naves with a large transept, shows clear signs of the Baroque restoration of the mid-eighteenth century. The apse is decorated with paintings by Carlo Rosa. Romanesque elements persist in the main facade.
The church stands on the remains of a pre-existing church building, known as Santa Maria de Episcopio. The building, in Apulian Romanesque style, was built from 1150, but was consecrated only in 1283. It underwent important renovations between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.
