The church is characterized by baroque motifs related to the representations of death (skulls and human bones) present on the facade. The wooden door is flanked by two skeletons in high relief. From here the procession of Good Friday starts.

The church was commissioned in 1670 by the Confraternity of Purgatorio under the patronage of Bishop Tommaso Acquaviva (1668-1672). It was consecrated in 1688 by the bishop of Bitonto Filippo Massarenghi, following the transfer of the homonymous Brotherhood.
